REVIEW: Marvel Legends Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows

Hasbro have been bombarding the market with Spider-Man figures this year with loads of in demand characters getting new releases as part of Spidey’s 60th Anniversary and the continuation of the retro line. So lets take a closer look at this new two pack.

An Amazing couple

FROM THE CREATORS:
Peter and Mary-Jane Parker are partners in marriage and crime-fighting as Spider-Man and Spinneret!
6-INCH SCALE COLLECTIBLE FIGURE: Fans, collectors, and kids alike can enjoy this 6-inch scale Spider-Man and Marvel’s Spinneret figure 2-pack inspired by the characters’ appearance in the Marvel Comics Renew Your Vows arc!

The Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows is an alternative reality story that features Peter Parker, MJ and their daughter Annie as a super hero trio. They have also appeared in the main marvel comics universe via multiversal Spider-Man crossover shenanigans.

Before reading on, if you prefer your reviews in video format, here is my quick summary view of the figures from YouTube. But for more details and more photos, read on!

Some big in demand Spidey figures hitting shelves this year, Rhino, Lizard, Scorpion, Doc Ock, etc. Spinneret is probably not as in demand as many of those (Hot take right there!). But I for one am pleased to add her to my Spider-verse shelf.

Mary Jane AKA Spinneret

MJ comes on the Shriek body mould which means pinless double jointed arms and legs, in other words the best female figure base that Hasbro has. It does the job here. She also comes with 3 pairs of hands, all the major poses you would want for a Spider-Person.

Spinneret also comes with an unmasked head which I think is a must have for figures at this price point. Its also going to be useful if you want to use another female body to make a casual MJ.

Mary Jane

Unfortunately despite the price increases, and the definite overall improvements in Marvel Legends I did get some QC issues with this fig. Spinneret is missing some web lines on her chest and there are paint scuffs on the mask and spider logo. Not as bad as others I’ve seen online but worth pointing out

spot the imperfections

Moving on to The Amazing Spider-Man, and I can say his “Amazing” prefix is accurate. We have ourselves here the best version of the web crawler I have seen from Hasbro. While he technically represents an alternative universe version of Peter Parker he’s no different visually from the main comic Spiderman we know and love.

This is the Spider-Man I grew up with in the 90’s, the colours are vibrant and the eyes nice and big. The printing on mine is sharp and clean and the lack of visible pins alone make this a fantastic upgrade to the (previous best figure) retro Spider-Man released a couple of years back. See them next to each other in the shot below

Retro Spidey on the left, renew your vows on the right.

The colours and printing on this new version make the figure stand out so much more, it almost makes the old figure which I loved look a little muddy.

Another thing this new version has over the old one is… toe articulation!

tiptoe

I love the toe articulation, its very useful for Spiderman poses. I did find him difficult to get standing on tip toes, in the photo above he is resting against the wall. I did get him to stand a couple of times but not long enough to get a photo.

Spidey comes with the same hand options as MJ and also comes with an unmasked head.

I really like this head sculpt, its what Peter Parker looks like to me… but I realise that’s very much linked to the comics that were coming out when I was reading them as a kid, so your mileage may vary.

Team Up

Spidey and Spinneret scale well together and with other figs in the line of course. Both have top notch articulation, MJ is not quite as articulated as Spidey but that’s normal for female figs and this is the most articulated female buck from Hasbro we have seen, so I can’t complain too much.

This is an excellent two pack. Yes the prices keep going up (not a problem exclusive to action figures), and there are some QC issues but generally I think Hasbro is making really good figures for the price point. They are not at the level of, say, Mafex but they are still a lot cheaper than a Mafex. I paid £56 for this box set and I think that’s decent value these days.

It would have been nice for this to be a 3 pack also featuring Annie/Spiderling, but I guess we will have to hold out hope for a release of her in future. One final gripe, It’s a shame if you really want this great Spider-Man figure and don’t want Spinneret, but don’t worry, Hasbro has plenty of other Spidey’s coming our way.

So, overall, great figs, good alternative hands and heads, excellent articulation and barring a few errors specific to me, fantastic paint details.
