REVIEW: Mezco Predator

Mezco bring us their take on the “Jungle Hunter” Predator, i.e the one from the original 1980’s movie. I pre-ordered this a few years ago and it finally arrived on my doorstep last week.

I’ve never had a Predator figure in hand before so I really want to put this guy through his paces, let’s get to it…

FROM MEZCO:
Predator has arrived to hunt the One:12 Collective!
The One:12 Collective Predator is outfitted in battle armor with thermal netting and a fortified chest plate, allowing for greater mobility while hunting. The ruthless hunter comes with 2 removable bandoliers made from the bones of his prey and features a head portrait with an interchangeable mouthpiece and light-up bio-helmet – all attached via a magnet.
Predator always has the upper hand and comes complete with advanced weaponry such as a shoulder-mounted Plasmacaster with light-up function – capable of firing armor-penetrating plasma blasts at distant targets, wrist gauntlet with interchangeable blades, backpack with removable Medicomp, removable trophy accessories, and a severed spine and skull that can be held.

This fully posable action figure stands approx 17 cm tall and comes in a window box

Major, You Better Take a Look At This?

Mezco Predator

Predator comes jam packed with accessories as all good Mezco’s do. Trophy necklaces, med kits, shoulder cannons, wrist blades, a wide selection of hands and a disembodied bloody skull and spine.

Do you need a hand?

Predator comes jam packed with accessories as all good Mezco’s do. Necklaces, , shoulder cannons, blades, wide selection of hands and a disembodied bloody skull and spine.

I’m personally not a fan of adding blood to my photos but I appreciate it’s appropriate for this particular figure, just not for my photography. Regardless it’s a cool looking accessory. The blades are also really nice and you can swap between retracted or extended.

In addition to aal of that he also has a med kit so he can patch himself up after a run in with Schwarzenegger/Glover/Midthunder/Xenomorph (delete as appropriate) .

He also comes with two heads. Let’s talk about those.

You’re One Ugly Mother…

My favourite thing about this figure are these 2 heads. One is unmasked but gives you the option of having his mouth open or closed. These mouth pieces connect magnetically and look pretty darn seamless.

The second head has a mask. Underneath that mask is a battery compartment and switch, so you can turn on his famous red targeting light.

The heads themselves are wonderfully detailed, the dreadlocks are individual, rubbery strands that do not restrict articulation. I found these really impressive.

Because You’re worth it

What The Hell Could Have Done This To A Man?

Predator is a dangerous with any weapon but his most iconic one is his plasmacaster. This shoulder mounted weapon fits on snuggly but is quite close to the head so does limit head articulation a tiny bit.  This also has a battery compartment. not going to lie I found this very fiddly. Once in though the cannon has a strong blue light that looks even better when you add the translucent blast effect.

The cannon itself lifts up and down but I couldn’t get it to rotate. Maybe I was being cautious but I am pretty sure its fixed. I also like it without the blast effect.

If It Bleeds We Can Kill It

The figure itself is where this Predator shows its real weaknesses. He has some nice details and the fabric netting that makes up his outfit is well done. But the articulation is quite lacking in my opinion. I could barely get any movement out of the ankles which is one of the most important things for me when posing figures. The elbows and knees are basic and go about 90 degrees since they are just single jointed.

Dynamic?

Waist and shoulder movement was also super limited and I could noy really get him into anything like a good crouching pose.

His Armor is nicely sculpted with dents and scratches, but a little bit of extra paint might have helped. especially on his wrist tech. The one in his left arm opens and really could have done with some paint detail. I also found this part of his wrist computer that opened to be flimsy and the lid constantly fell off.

Details make a big difference

I did like that he came with short and extended blades and that these were easy to switch over.

Some No Damn Fool Accused You Of Being The Best

I’m possibly being a little harsh on this figure, but Mezco figures are not cheap so I set higher standards than I would for say, a Marvel Legend.

At a glance this figure is beautiful, he looks great on the shelf and scales nicely with other 6 inch figures.

I also think he looks great on camera and the light up functions give him something cool to play with.

But overall despite looking good and having fantastic accessories I found this figure a little disappointing. However if you love Predator, you love Mezco and you are not bothered about articulation then this still might be the hunter for you.
