FEATURE: Why I Love Cosmic Legions… And Sold Them All

I’ve been collecting Mythic Legion, the medieval fantasy themed figures from Four Horsemen Studios, for a few years now. For reference here is my Review of one of them. However, When 4H launched Cosmic Legions I decided to stay away from them for a couple of reasons that will be familiar to lots of toy collectors; Cost & Space.

Investigating alien life

COST: I needed to spend less money and decided to avoid collecting another line. SPACE: I mean 2 different things here really. I don’t have any space to put these things, and I also don’t have a lot of Space based props or dioramas to use for photos of these figures.

Anyway, something changed a few months back. I saw someone selling an incomplete Cosmic Legion, specifically the Sphexian Prison Guard who I had seen reviews of and knew was meant to be a great figure. I decided to grab him and shoot some photos. Down the Rabbit hole we go!

Prison Guard

Now that I had one of these guys, I thought I should look out for another to go with him, and then as though the toy collecting gods (or demons?) were listening I saw another one for a low price almost immediately, this time a space travelling version of one of my favourite types of Mythic Legions… A skeleton!

Space Skelly

These are both fantastic figures, lovely paint detail, especially on the bug looking guard. Then a surprise turned up in the post… a massive space dragon that I forgot I had pre-ordered with the idea of customising into a Mythic Legion Dragonborn.

Alien Dragonborn

Now I had 3 of these things, and they were all just sitting in a drawer because I DON’T HAVE SPACE! That didn’t stop me,  though. Now I had three I was basically collecting, I picked up another cheap one from Marketplace, this lovely lady:

She’s here to take names and blast aliens

Then, and this is when I realised I was underground with the big eared bunny’s, I bought one full price online. This creepy alien dude:

Greetings stranger

Five Figures in little over a month with nowhere to put them, and I was scouring around for more!

As I was sorting some shelves a couple of weeks back I was getting frustrated with finding space for things (again!), a switch flipped in my head. I’m collecting a load of different things already and I reminded myself why I had chose not to collect these in the first place. So I decided to sell up. This was an easier decision than I had expected, but I gave myself one condition.

Who goes there?

I had to make sure I took a photo I was happy with featuring each of them. A fun photo task that would make me feel like I had extracted some value out of these guys before moving them on. That’s one of the things I love about Toy Photography, the fun I have taking photos makes me feel like I get an extra level of value from my action figures.

Anyway, I took most of the photos you see on this post over a Saturday and Sunday and quickly sold the figures via Facebook marketplace on the Sunday evening.

Space Skelly vs Space Bug

Just to reiterate… Not because they are not great figures, but because I CANNOT COLLECT EVERYTHING I think looks cool. I think some other toy collectors can probably relate to this.

She has her eye on you

This felt quite therapeutic, I was motivated to get some good shots and I could then happily move the figures on. And I did. All sold. Fortunately Legions hold their value pretty well and I got back mostly what I paid.

Scanning for approaching space craft

I couldn’t recommend Cosmic Legions enough, they are fantastic figures, maybe lacking in articulation here and there but just like Mythics, that’s not their main draw. They are amazingly well designed, real high quality builds and the mostly come with fantastic paint applications on both the figures and accessories.

They also appeal to me for the same reason Mythic Legions do, for me they are blank slate characters with back stories  I can imagine for myself, now I know there is a lot of lore and story behind Legions but I have intentionally stayed away from that. I’m sure it’s great but that’s not why I buy them.

Just look at the flowers

I might do this more going forward with other figures I’m interested in but don’t have space (or funds!) to collect; buy, shoot, sell. I’ll just need to keep reminding myself, YOU CAN’T COLLECT EVERYTHING.

The truth is out there
