REVIEW: Super7 Shadow Demons

It had been a little while since I last opened up a figure from Super7’s Ultimates range. I have all the TMNT characters I want from them and the last few figures in this line I bought had some fantastic traits but ultimately (pun not intended) I found them to be overpriced. The appeal of a two pack of generic Dungeons and Dragons monsters piqued my interest though.

From Super7:

Inspired by the classic ’80s animated series, this 2-pack of highly articulated, 7” scale Dungeons & Dragons ULTIMATES! Shadow Demons Figures features intricate sculpt and premium paint detail and comes with an array of interchangeable heads and hands, as well as a pair of Shadow Base figure stands.

Video Review

Here is a short video review for those that prefer that format or who want to see the figure in motion

Shadow of a Review

This review will be shorter than most of my others, that’s because, despite wanting ro review these demonic entities, there’s just not a lot to say about them.

While you can only expect so much from a 2 pack priced the same as a single figure, this pair somehow still failed to reach my lowered expectations.

Shadow Boxing

These figures will not be throwing any punches because they do not have any fists, unusual for action figures but I suppose you wouldnt expect them to be involved in any fisticuffs, fists can be useful for other poses too, so its a shame we did not get any to provide some variety.

They share a 4 pairs of hands, no duplicates which means they can’t both have the exact same hands. Not a problem though because all 4 pairs are quite similar ranging from open and relaxed to open and creepy. Yep nothing dramatic here, one hand almost looks like its pointing… but not quite.

That’s it for accessories unless you count the 2 translucent stands. I don’t. These are needed for the ghostly forms of these figures to stand since rather than legs, they have tails. That’s true to the source material (the 80’s D&D cartoon) and the stands work well.

Eye Shadow

The two figures are identical barring a different face and mirrored tails, that’s absolutely fine for a monster that should be mass-able

The Shadow Demons themselves look good at first glance, there’s only so much you can do with a shadowy monster! Most elements of the figure are a dark translucent plastic, I think, with black paint in places while the torso is a solid black plastic with no paint at all. The integration of those is well done.

The paint on the faces is just for eyes and eyebrows, with a slightly different expression for each. It’s very simplistic but achieves the intended look.

I probably would have preferred some additional paint to add shading, or have the figures be all dark translucent plastic with black & grey paint used to add detail. I have noticed that the solid black elements really seem to attract dust. I shot these within an hour of opening them so was surprised to see sprinklings of dust all over them in my photos.

Shadow Puppet

The shadow demons stand about 5 ½  inches tall on their stands.Articulation wise there are pluses and minus’. There is tilt and rotation at the waist and the chest which works well. But the arms are only single jointed at the elbows, there’s a bicep swivel and basic shoulder articulation, no butterfly joints.

The wings are attached on a ball which allows a fair few different positions to be achieved, but I did still find couldn’t always get them where I wanted.

The tail of course has no movement in it but is nicely sculpted. Overall I wished I could have gotten a bit more variety out of it.

Shadow of a Doubt

Super7 have failed to win me back over with this item. The figures are fine, but I think the main problem is I have seen so much better at a much lower price. Mythic legions are comparable price wise and have way more detail and way more accessories. Articulation wise Legions even win out.

Yes the sculpts are nice and they are trying to achieve that cartoon aesthetic so too much detail would not be accurate. But then the price should reflect that. £55 for a pair of figures with just a few hands might seem like a good deal but these are not full figures, they are smaller than others in the line, have limited paint and articulation.

I won’t be rushing out to buy more Super7 D&D figures, but I will enjoy having these two in my collection for background monsters in photos.
